Aliyah Preparation

Dear Friends,

Israel is a very unique country from very many aspects. One of them is indeed related to Aliyah: more than 40% of Israel’s population are Olim! This means that there is an Oleh in practically every Israeli family. Nevertheless, going on Aliyah is still a challenge both to the individuals involved and their families and to Israel as a society and a state.

Going on Aliyah involves significant changes in many aspects of life, all of which require new learning and willingness to adapt. The most obvious are: using Hebrew in everyday life, learning and adjusting to a new culture and social system with its values, norms and codes of behaviour, acquiring a new job, adapting to new educational practices … and so much more. Thus, the main challenge of Aliyah is that of managing and adapting to these changes effectively and easily.

A successful Aliyah requires some knowledge of the immigration process and an understanding of the type of transformation that is likely to occur in the different areas of life. It also requires some management skills to predict, plan and carry out the Aliyah process efficiently.  Acknowledging this, the Aliyah department is offering a series of courses and workshops for prospective Olim, titled: Aliyah: Managing the change.

The courses and workshops are organised around three themes, each focusing on a different aspect of the Aliyah experience. The first addresses the pre-Aliyah stages: from the decision making and planning stages to the shipping. The second explores the post-Aliyah stages and focuses on the social, psychological and linguistic changes involved in the immigration and adaptation processes. The third part examines some of the main cultural characteristics of the Israeli society and the various patterns of integration that immigrants may follow.

The courses and workshops incorporate lectures, group discussions and exercises.

The courses and workshops are facilitated by Dr. Rona Hart, an Israeli sociologist who specialises in Migration Studies and Relocation Coaching. The courses were specifically designed to address the information needs of Olim from Britain.

The courses and workshops are meant for those of you who have already taken a decision to go on Aliyah, and also to those who may be at the deliberation stage and want an opportunity to learn more about Israel and the Aliyah journey.
